What Is TMJ (Jaw Joint) Treatment?
Yonsei Godeok S Dental Clinic
TMJ (jaw joint) treatment refers to methods for improving asymmetry and pain in the jaw joint that cause discomfort in daily life. We resolve TMJ disorders through a range of approaches — from appliance therapy worn directly to correct the joint, to Botox and physical therapy.
Types of TMJ Treatment
- Physical therapy
- Occlusal stabilization appliance (bite splint)
- Botox treatment
Effects of TMJ Treatment
- Relief of pain and inflammation in the tissues around the jaw joint
- Relief of pain in the muscles around the jaw
- Relief of jaw joint pain when chewing caused by osteoarthritis
- Improvement of limited mouth opening (difficulty opening the mouth)
Precautions for the Occlusal Stabilization Appliance
The occlusal stabilization appliance worn during TMJ treatment delivers effective results only when used correctly, following the proper guidelines.
- Wear the appliance primarily during sleep.
- While wearing the appliance, do not deliberately bite down on it — keep your jaw natural and relaxed.
- You may feel slight discomfort when wearing the appliance.
- Keep it clean by brushing it with a toothbrush once a day. (Do not use toothpaste.)
- Because the appliance must be adjusted as your symptoms improve, visit the clinic regularly as directed by your dentist.
